Leonard A. Gerhart
September 21, 1932 - October 12, 2016
Leonard Gerhart, 84, passed away peacefully Wednesday morning, October 12, 2016, from cancer.
Leonard Anton Gerhart, son of Anton and Clem (Bosch) Gerhart was born on September 21, 1932 in Halliday, ND. After graduating high school in 1950,
he taught grades 1-8 in a country school for 6 years and also attended summer school for 3 years.
Leonard was united in marriage to Pauline Bernhardt on March 3, 1962. The couple made their home both in Fargo and Grand Forks, ND before moving to Sioux Falls, SD in 1969. Leonard worked for Universal CIT for 13 years, and then went into the banking industry. His career at Valley Bank began in 1970 and ended 29 years later with his retirement in 1999.
During the last 17 years of retirement, Leonard and Pauline traveled south spending winter months in Lake Havasu City, AZ. Leonard was an avid hunter and fisherman; and had a true love of cars and boats. Throughout his lifetime, he owned 64 cars and 13 boats. He was also a member of the Siouxland Lions Club for 45 years, the National Rifle Association, and Ducks Unlimited.
Grateful for having shared his life are his wife, Pauline; two children, Paul (Tammy) Gerhart, Susan Gerhart; two grandchildren, Morgan and Madison Gerhart; one sister Mary Ann (Roland) Frey and two brothers, Simon (Lorraine) Gerhart, and Charles (Rose Marie) Gerhart.
A memorial mass will be at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, October 18, 2016 at Holy Spirit Catholic Church. Family will be present at the church one hour before the memorial mass. Memorials may be directed to Avera@Home Hospice or the Avera Cancer Foundation.
