June 19, 1947 - December 2, 2020

Joan A. Meade passed away peacefully at home from ALS on December 2, 2020 at the age of 73. A private family service is being held at Miller Westside Chapel, 6200 W 41st Street, on Monday, December 7, 2020.

Joan A. Meade, daughter of James and Celestine (Laber) Mayer, was born on June 19, 1947, in Parkston, South Dakota. Joan graduated high school from Parkston in 1965.

On April 15 1967, Joan was united in marriage to Norris Lagge of Tripp, South Dakota. Together they had two children Steven and Michele. Joan and Norris settled in Lead, South Dakota until his death November 2, 1973. Joan was blessed to have a continued relationship with the Lagge family until her death.

On September 27, 1975, Joan was united in marriage with Larry Meade of Glenwood, Minnesota. Joan and Larry lived in a few communities in Minnesota, Mayville North Dakota and settled in Sioux Falls South Dakota after Larry retired from Xcel Energy and she retired from Alco in the fall of 2001.

Joan worked first at Northwestern Bell as a telephone operator in Yankton South Dakota after high school. She was a homemaker for several years raising her children. In Redwood Falls, Minnesota, she worked at the Red Owl Grocery store in the Deli department. When Joan and Larry moved to Mayville, North Dakota she worked at Trail County Senior Citizen office doing secretarial work and completing the newsletter and later worked at Alco shopping center as secretary in Mayville North Dakota. She also attended some classes at Mayville State University. In 2001, Joan and Larry moved to Sioux Falls, South Dakota where Joan first worked at Morgan Stanley for a short time, and then she was hired at Sanford Hospital at the information desk where she worked until she retired. Joan loved this job and excelled at it. She had received some awards and her manager said he would love to have more “Joan Meade’s” working for him.

Joan had many hobbies and passions. She loved and cherished her family and friends and spending time with them all. She loved camping at the Hart Ranch where she made many memories with her family, playing games and cards. She learned how to knit and crochet from a dear friend, Ethlyn Smith and made beautiful baby clothes, blankets, afghans, etc. She loved to read and especially Christmas books. Joan loved Christmas time and her decorating skills shined during the season. Joan also loved to have the yearly rummage sale with her sisters. She enjoyed shopping. Joan loved music and going to concerts. She loved sending and receiving cards. She looked forward to the mail each day. Most importantly, Joan loved all of her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren and cherished all the memories with them.

Joan was known for her fashion style and would get complimented all of the time on her clothes, jewelry, purses, etc. She had an elegance and confidence about her. She had a beauty inside and out that shined and brightened anyone’s day. Joan was a selfless person who put others ahead of herself and always helped others. She was a beautiful soul.

Joan was preceded in death by her parents and first husband Norris.

Joan is survived by her husband Larry Meade, Sr.; children, son Lawrence Meade, Jr. (Amy Golackson), son James (Jodi) Meade, son Steven (Teresa) Lagge, daughter Michele (Tony) Kochel, and son John Pat Meade; grandchildren, Marc (Jessica) Meade, Chaz Meade, Buzz Meade, Jessica Meade, Tyler Lagge, Nacy Dean, John Schwaller, Jr., Ashley (Logan Sanner) Schwaller, Rheanna (Andrew Thompson) Schwaller; great grandchildren Kalib Schwaller, Kaylee Dean, Braxton Sanner, Tegan Sanner, Keller Meade and Leia Meade; brother Linus Mayer, sisters Shirley (Wynne) Zellmer, Marcia (Denny) Engel, Patricia (Gene) Fergen and Joan was blessed with several in-laws, nieces and nephews. Her family and friends made her life complete. Although we can’t list everyone, Joan viewed every single family member, friend, a blessing in her life. She was blessed with many, many beautiful people.
