Howard Koosman, 67, of Tea, SD died Wednesday, February 7, 2007 at the University of Minnesota Medical Center in Minneapolis, MN. Howard was born on July 25, 1939 on the William Beier farm near Howard Lake, MN. He was baptized at St. James Lutheran Church in Howard Lake on August 13, 1939. He attended elementary school at the Bethlehem Lutheran School in Annandale, MN. He was confirmed at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in May of 1952. Howard attended high school at Howard Lake High School, graduating in 1956. Following graduation, he attended college at Concordia in St. Paul, MN, graduating with an Associate in Arts Degree in 1958. In 1978, he attained a Master of Education Degree from Concordia Teachers College in Seward, NE. On December 29, 1962, he was united in marriage with Anne Thalmann in Ottertail, MN. Howard served as a teacher and principal at St. John's Lutheran School in Ottertail, MN from the fall of 1961 to 1968. He was specifically teaching grades 1-8 for the first 5 years, and grades 4-8 for the remaining 2 years. Howard also served as teacher, principal, youth director and choir director at Zion Lutheran Church and School in Rapid City from 1969 to 1979. In 1979 and 1980, he served as a teacher and principal of Trinity Lutheran School in Sauk Rapids, MN. Howard also served as Executive Secretary to the Board of Directors, and assistant to the President of the South Dakota District of the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod from 1980 to 1997. In 1997, he began serving as principal at Immanuel Lutheran School in Olivette (St. Louis) Missouri, a position he held until his retirement from education in 2001. Grateful for having shared his life are his wife, Anne, of Tea, SD; his children, James (Julie) Koosman, of Tea, SD, Brenda (John) Wood, of Rock Valley, IA, Sandra Swier of Vermillion, SD, John (Michelle) Koosman, of Sioux Falls, SD, Barbara (Richard) Barr, of Fullerton, CA; and 10 very special grandchildren, Andy, Ally and Zach Koosman, Stephanie Swier, Clarissa and Ashley Wood, Christin, Courtney and Kylee Koosman, and Danielle Barr. He was preceded in death by his parents, Herbert and Ella Koosman; an infant brother; his other brothers, Waldon, Ivan, Clarence, Aaron, and Rollin; and a sister, Lorna. He was also preceded in death by a son-in-law, Kyle Swier.
