LONG ILLNESS FATAL TO EDGAR A. HORNBY, OFFICIAL MANY YEARS
Funeral Rites for Edgar Hornby Saturday; Survived by Two Brothers

After an illness of seven years, death came peacefully last Wednesday afternoon to Edgar A. Hornby, former county, state and federal official, at the age of 71 years, 2 months and 9 days.

After suffering a stroke while a resident at the St. Vincent hotel, he was for several years a patient at the city hospital and more recently at Fairview Home. After attending him Wednesday afternoon Mrs. Sena Fallang, manager of the home, went to another part of the house on an errand, but returned soon to find that he had passed away.

Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon at the Presbyterian church, with the Rev. W.J. Drummond officiating. Music for the occasion was furnished by a quartet of ladies including Mrs. R.R. Fisk, Mrs. H.M. Halverson and Katherine Kelvie, with Mrs. Malcolm Peterson at the organ.

Interment was made in Egan Hillside cemetery.

Hornby's official service with Moody county and with the state of South Dakota covered an unusual number of years as such tenures go.

He was elected county auditor in 1908 to continue in service through the two terms that are permitted under constitutional restrictions in this state. In 1912 he was elected treasurer to serve one term. Thereafter he served as deputy auditor part of the time and especially when Lee Buck, then auditor, as called to military service, until he was elected again as auditor, serving two terms in the 1919-1923 interim.

On September 30, 1930, he was named acting postmaster in Flandreau to succeed Lee E. Buck, a position for which he was given full official appointment on February 4, 1931, after which he continued in that position until C.H. Schyan was named on August 27, 1935.

Next honor came to him in 1938 with appointment by Governor Leslie Jensen as secretary of the state fair board, a position in which he served two years.
